Tone Voicing

The piano hammer has gone through a number of evolutionary steps to where it is today. However, on quality hammers there is still natural material used. These include various species of wood for the core molding. These are pressed into sheep wool felt. There have been a few processes developed to produce the hammer head we know and see on today's piano actions.

Regardless of the process and material the piano hammers can become worn and compressed with usage and time. This can mostly cause a harsh brittle tone that is grating thus making the piano unpleasant to play.

The tone voicing process can help to reverse or undo the effects of years of use and hard playing. Initially, it must be determined whether the hammer has enough felt life left to be able to perform lasting treatment to return it to a pleasing tone quality.

Let me assess your piano's tone and discuss this process with you. My goal is to make your piano sound its best so that you will want to sit down and play it again.
